WACO, Texas --- New Mexico (3-4) softball gave up a run in the seventh innings and fell to Stephen F. Austin, 5-4, Saturday during the Getterman Classic. Lobo junior Katie Gilmore went 2-for-3 in the loss including a double and a home run. New Mexico split a pair of games Saturday after beating Northwestern State (La.), 3-0, earlier in the day. The Lobos close out the Getterman Classic Sunday against Ole Miss at 8 a.m. MT.
Gilmore gave New Mexico a 1-0 lead in the third inning after she hit a solo home run to right field. It was her first home run of the year and the teams fourth.
The Ladyjacks (3-6) used the long ball to take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman Kayla Gutowski blasted a three-run homer to center field and gave SFA a 3-1 lead.
The Lobos tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning. Gilmore lined a double to center field scoring two runners and keeping New Mexico in the game. Gilmore had four RBIs in the game.
The game wouldn't stay tied long. In the bottom of the fifth, Benet Higgs gave the Ladyjacks a 4-3 with an RBI double. Higgs had one of three hits in the inning for SFA.
New Mexico loaded the bases in the sixth inning and managed to get a run to tie the game at 4-4. Gilmore walked with the bases jammed with Lobos and forced across a run. It would be the last run UNM would score in the game.
SFA won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ladyjack junior Briana Bishop came through with a run-scoring single and gave SFA the 5-4 victory.
Monika Covington pitched the complete game for Stephen F. Austin and got the win. Covington improved to 2-3 overall after striking out six batters.
Freshman Danielle Castro started the game for New Mexico and got the no decision. Castro threw 3 1/3 innings allowing three runs on four hits. Senior Analise Rubalcava came on in relief and took the loss. Rubalcava pitched the final 3 1/3 innings giving up two runs on six hits. Rubalcava dropped to 2-2 on the year.
New Mexico will finish the Getterman Classic with Mississippi Sunday at 8 a.m. MT. Gametracker will be available at www.GoLobos.com.
