Lobo Women's Basketball Hosts UNLV Wednesday to Open Conference Play

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The 25th-ranked New Mexico women's basketball team is 11-2 on the season and recently closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Lobos cracked the national polls last week and will open Mountain West Conference action on Wednesday against UNLV at 7 p.m. inside The Pit. New Mexico had one of its best non-conference records in school history and has won eight of the last nine games.

The UNLV game Wednesday will be broadcast live on My50-TV in the Albuquerque area with Scott Stiegler and Abbie Letz calling the action. The game will also be available on the radio at 610 AM The Sports Animal. Joe Behrend will provide the play-by-play with Nikki Neckroth-Labota handling the color analysis. The Rebels are 7-6 on the season and have lost their last two games. UNLV is led by Shamela Hampton's 14.6 points per game. Three Rebels are averaging in double figures this season.

UNLV leads the all-time series with New Mexico 21-15 but the Lobos have won four of the last five meetings. UNM swept both games last year.

Lobo head coach Don Flanagan is 13-11 all-time against the Rebels while new UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier is 0-2 against the Lobos. Olivier dropped two games against UNM while she was the head coach at UCLA.

New Mexico is 5-4 in Mountain West Conference openers and 8-5 in openers under Don Flanagan. UNM lost its only conference opener with UNLV on Jan. 6, 2002, 62-53, inside The Pit. The 2008-09 MWC schedule includes 16 games with half being played at home.

UNM is 10-0 inside The Pit this season with victories over DePaul, Nebraska, Texas Tech, UTEP and New Mexico State. The Lobos are averaging 7,630 fans per game this season.

Junior Amy Beggin is leading New Mexico in scoring with 16.1 points per game. Senior Angela Hartill is the only other player scoring in double figures with 12.5 points per game. Senior Amanda Adamson is pulling down a team high 6.9 boards a game.
