Lobos Make It to the Finals in Singles and Doubles at ITA Regional Championship

LAS VEGAS, NEV.—Today was an extraordinary day for Lobo Jadon Phillips as he will be advancing to the finals in both singles and the doubles main draw with teammate Phil Anderson. The player who wins the finals in singles and the players who win the finals in doubles will each receive a slot at the ITA National Indoor Tournament held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. This prestigious tournament only allows 32 players for the singles draw and 16 doubles teams.

This is the first time since 1999 that UNM has been represented in the finals of both singles and doubles at regionals. Jadon Phillips has made this tournament one to never forget as he as beaten NAU’s Patrick Shimmelbauer, Utah State’s Fredrik Peterson, seeded number 25 Brigham Young’s Keaton Cullimore, seeded number 17 Boise State’s Garrett Patton, seeded number seven his teammate Ben Dunbar, and just today seeded number five Boise State’s James Meridith with a score of 6-2, 6-2.

He will have to face seeded number two Damian Hume of Boise State in the finals and win in order to receive a slot at the ITA National Indoor Tournament. This match will be played at 12:30 pm tomorrow.

Jadon Phillips and teammate Phil Anderson have had their share of victories in the doubles department as they will also be playing for a slot at the ITA National Indoor Tournament in doubles.

The duo are seeded number one in the tournament receiving a bye in the round of 64, defeating UNLV’s Batyi/Kenyon, Idao State’s Norman/Suarez, and just today defeating seeded number eight Boise State’s Bettles/Sears with a two game win over them finishing the match 9-7. They certainly were not done playing today as they faced seeded 10 Brigham Young’s Sargeant/Smith later that afternoon winning with a score of 8-5.

The Lobos will have to defeat University of Idaho’s Cirstea/Dobbs in order to claim their slot at the ITA National Indoor Tournament.

The ITA National Indoor Tournament is not to be taken lightly as it is considered to be the toughest tournament and the only event on the ITA calendar featuring elite players from every level of college tennis. Past champions include John Isner(Georgia), James Blake (Harvard), and the doubles duo Bob and Mike Bryan (Stanford).

The following matches were played today:

In singles, Jadon Phillips played against seeded number five Boise State’s James Meredith defeating him with a score of 6-2, 6-2. He will face Boise State’s David Hume in the finals of the main draw.

In singles consolation, Mads Hegelund defeated University of Arizona’s Mario Urquidi with a score of 6-4, 6-7, 6-0. He fell to University of Arizona’s Carlos Bermudez with a score of 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals.

In the doubles main draw, Anderson/Phillips defeated Boise State’s Bettles/Sears with a close score of 9-7. They moved on to the semifinals beating Brigham Young’s Sargeant/Smith with a score of 8-5. They will face University of Idaho’s Cirstea/Dobbs in the finals.

In the doubles consolation, Dunbar/Hignett put up a good fight against Univeristy of Idaho’s Akbar/Bendeck but could not hold it in the tiebreak falling 9-8 in the quarterfinals.

Play will resume tomorrow at 11:00 am with Anderson/Phillips going head to head with University of Idaho’s Cirstea/Dobbs for the championship and a slot at the prestigious ITA National Indoor Tournament.
