PROVO, Utah - The BYU softball team took both games of the doubleheader played in Provo, Utah on Friday evening from the Lobos (29-28, 3-10). The Cougars won game one, 7-4 and game two, 4-0.
In game one, BYU built a 2-0 lead with one run in the second and third innings. New Mexico fought back to take the lead with a three-run fifth inning. Freshman Ryanne Hodgins singled up the middle to drive home classmate Robyn Hutson. Two batters later, sophomore Stephanie Kennedy doubled down the right field line to bring home Hodgins and sophomore Jamar Bynum.
The Cougars fired back with a five-run inning in the bottom of the fifth. New Mexico tried to rally again, scoring one run off of a Hodgins single to left center but that is all the Lobos could muster.
Senior Amy Dumas tossed an eight-hit complete game in the night cap, giving up three walks while striking out five. The Cougars got one run in the second, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.
The Lobos only managed three hits off BYU in game two, one from Kennedy, senior Kim Korsak and junior Cassie Chavez. On the day, Hodgins led the Lobos hitting .500 (3-for-6) with two RBI and one run scored. Korsak, Chavez and Hutson were all 2-for-6 (.333) with Hutson and Chavez each scoring one run.
New Mexico returns to action tomorrow against Utah in Salt Lake City at for another twin bill. The first pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m. PDT.
