TEEING OFF IN 2009 - The 34th-ranked University of New Mexico women's golf team begins its 2009 spring season Sunday, traveling to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico for the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Hosted by Purdue University, the 54-hole tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,219-yard Coco Beach Golf Course. Shotgun starts Sunday and Monday begin at 6 a.m. MST, and Tuesday at 5:30 a.m. There are no live stats for the tournament.
This is the Lobos' first appearance at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Alabama won last year with a team total of 880. The individual winner was Arkansas' Stacy Lewis at 8-under 208. Puerto Rico is the first of what UNM hopes will be seven team competitions in the spring of 2009. UNM looks to defend its Mountain West Conference title in April at the Bayonet Blackhorse Golf Club on the Monterey Peninsula in California.
THE FIELD - The 16-team field includes host and 17th-ranked Purdue, plus Florida State, No. 9 Georgia, Indiana, Iowa State, No. 21 Kent State, No. 45 Michigan, Minnesota, No. 38 North Carolina State, Northwestern, Oklahoma, No. 37 TCU, No. 48 Tennessee, Texas Tech and Wisconsin.
LOBO LINEUP - Head coach Jill Trujillo will travel seniors Mikaela Backstedt and Morgan Grantham, juniors Britney Choy and Jodi Ewart and freshman Rebecca Hellbom. Freshman Sarah Salvo will compete as an individual. Ewart is ranked 35th in the nation by Golfweek.
HEAD COACH Jill Trujillo - A 1990 UNM graduate, Jill Trujillo is in her second season in charge of the women's golf program. Trujillo led New Mexico to a pair of team titles in 2007-08, including the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships. She was named the 2007-08 MWC Coach of the Year.
