Las Vegas, Nev. - The University of New Mexico men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Regional today. Seniors Johnny Parkes and Graeme Kassautzki, and junior Chandler Brass, advanced to the singles round of 32.
Parkes, who received a first round bye, defeated Nico Riego De Dios of Eastern Washington in the round of 64, 6-2, 6-4. Kassautzki also received a first round bye before defeating Utah State's Bryan Marchant, 6-3, 6-2. Brass notched two wins, a 7-6, 6-3, victory over Denver's Johan Gunnarsson, and a 6-0, 6-3, victory over Cassidy Mears of BYU.
A total of eight Lobos are competing in the event. Parkes, Kassutzki, and Brass need two more wins to advance to the quarterfinals of the draw.
Freshman Carl Ho, who won the Balloon Fiesta Invite this past weekend, also had one win, defeating Utah State's Matt Searle, 6-1, 6-1.
Four Lobo doubles pairs will play Friday in the main draw round of 32.
The Invite continues through the weekend, concluding on Sunday, Oct. 19.
