ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico forward Porche Torrance has earned Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors for games played from Dec. 26, 2011-Jan. 1, 2012. It is the first weekly award for Torrance this season and the second of her career.
Torrance, a 6-0 senior out of Grapevine, Texas, helped the Lobos to a 59-58 win over New Mexico State in Las Cruces last week. The lead also gave UNM women's team a sweep of the Aggies in the 2011-12 Rio Grande Rivalry. New Mexico currently leads the Rivalry with a score of 10.5 points to NMSU's 7.5 points
Torrance recorded a double-double with 11 points, including the game-winning basket, and 15 rebounds for the win. It was her second double-double of the season and sixth of her career. She shot .333 (4-12) from the field and was 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Torrance also had two assists and three steals in UNM's only game of the week.
"Porche is playing like a senior and captain," head coach Yvonne Sanchez said. "She deserves this because she is a very good player and teammate."
In 14 games played this season, Torrance has scored in double figures in eight contests and has led the team in scoring twice. She currently ranks in the top five in the MW in multiple categories, holding the No. 1 spot in defensive rebounds with 6.3 per game, and the No. 2 spot in blocked shots (2.3 per game) and in total rebounds (8.9 per game).
On the season, Torrance has 91 points and leads the team with 24 blocks. Her 107 career blocks puts her at fourth place in New Mexico's record book.
After closing out non-conference play with a 70-44 victory over Houston, the Lobos kick off conference play next Wednesday with a trip to Boise. New Mexico will take on the Broncos at 7 p.m. on Jan. 11.
