ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico softball defeated Texas Tech, 8-4, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Lobo Invitational held at Lobo Field. Freshman Tianna George highlighted the game with a 3-for-4 performance that included her second home run of the year. The Lobos finished the tournament with a 2-2 record with victories over the Red Raiders and Missouri. UNM is 6-5 on the year and host Oklahoma State Friday at 5 p.m.
The Lobos scored a run in the first four innings before erupting for four runs in the fifth. UNM recorded nine hits in the contest and had three players record multiple hits. George was the only Lobo to have three hits while sophomore Sara Loeffelholz and senior Lindsey Elcess had a pair.
George scored the first run for New Mexico in the opening inning after reaching on a single up the middle. George eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.
UNM continued its offensively production in the second inning when Elcess came through with an RBI double to right center. Junior Samantha Hughes scored the run and extended the UNM lead to 2-0.
Texas Tech came alive in the third with a run off UNM starter Kelly Ninemire. The Red Raiders recorded a string of three consecutive hits and cut the deficit to 3-1.
UNM quickly added another run in the third after capitalizing on a TTU error. Sophomore Katie Gilmore singled and later scored during the inning.
Both teams plated a run in the fourth including a solo homer by George down the left field line for UNM. The Red Raiders would not go away and scored twice in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. TTU was able to collect four hits in the fifth inning during five straight at-bats.
UNM responded with a four run fifth inning and cruised to the victory. The Lobos received hits from Loeffelholz and George during the at-bat and took advantage of two fielding miscues by TTU.
Freshman Kyla Nelson was the winning pitcher for UNM and improved to 3-3 overall. Nelson pitched three scoreless innings and only allowed a hit in the victory. Ninemire started the game and went four innings allowing two runs on seven hits. Freshman Madelyn Machac made a quick relief appearance facing three batters and giving up two runs on three hits.
Tye Coats took the loss for TTU and fell to 0-4 on the year. The Red Raiders are 0-12 on the year.
The Lobos host OSU next weekend for a three-game series. The first game is set for 5 p.m. Friday at Lobo Field.
