ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The New Mexico volleyball team got the 2007 season off to a great start with a 3-1 win against Florida Atlantic in the first round of the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic at the Johnson Center. The Lobos (1-0) won the match, 30-14, 30-25, 27-30, and 30-17.
"I was really pleased with our tempo in about two and a half of the games," said first-year UNM head coach Jeff Nelson. "Florida Atlantic is a really good team. It was a great match for us. Their middles were really dynamic and they have an outside hitter who can really swing and bring some heat. A great match for us to play right out of the blocks."
The Lobos had five players with double digit kills, led by All-America candidate Jeanne Fairchild with 20. Fairchild, a junior outside hitter, also led the team in hitting percentage at .325 and contributed two service aces, two block assists and eight digs.
"Jeanne had a great night offensively, both in kills and efficiency, and really got the job done," said Nelson.
Junior transfer Kerri Beck was the second-leading point scorer for the Lobos with 16.5, including three service aces in a 8-0 run by the Lobos in Game One to take a 17-6 lead. Beck ended the night with five service aces, 10 kills, and three blocks.
Sophomore Anna Lehne looked solid with 12 kills and three blocks on the night after an injury-riddled freshman season. Sophomore Rose Morris and freshman Lisa Meeter each chipped in 10 kills. Morris added two blocks and three digs, while Meeter had a service ace, a block and seven digs.
Nelson used junior Sarah Kwasigroch and redshirt freshman Jade Michaelsen at setter. Michaelsen put up 33 assists, two kills and four blocks, while Kwasigroch had 27 assists, a service ace, and 10 digs.
The Lobos combined for 11 services aces and 8.5 blocks in the match, while hitting .250. UNM hit a game-high .310 in Game One to get the night going.
"We served the ball really well in Games One and Four, not as well in Two and Three, and that is what kept it close," added Nelson. "We were pushing more in Two and Three, instead of attacking our serve."
Earlier in the evening, San Jose State defeated Grambling State, 30-24, 30-18, 30-23 in the first match of the tournament. Jennifer Senftleben had 16 kills for the Spartans.
Action continues on Saturday with the second and third rounds of the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic at 10 a.m. when Florida Atlantic plays San Jose State, followed by New Mexico vs. Grambling State at 12:30 p.m. The evening session will begin at 5 p.m. with Grambling vs. FAU, followed by New Mexico vs. SJSU at 7:30 p.m.
