ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team recently received the 2008-09 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The Lobos, under the direction of head coach Jeff Nelson, were one of 71 NCAA Division I women's teams to maintain a 3.30 or higher cumulative team grade point average (g.p.a.) during the 2008-09 academic year.
"It was another great year for the Lobo volleyball team in the classroom," said Nelson. "I am extremely proud of our team and the huge efforts they make every semester to be strong academically. This speaks highly of the type of program we run and the work ethic of our players."
During 2008-09, the Lobo volleyball team recorded its third-highest semester team g.p.a. of 3.37 in the Spring 2009 semester. It was the 13th consecutive semester that the team has recorded a 3.06 or higher team g.p.a. All-American Jeanne Fairchild represented the team on the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI Team in Fall 2008 before leaving to play professionally in Puerto Rico. Student-athletes Jade Michaelsen, Allie Suiter, Kelly Williamson and Amy Wong were named 2008-09 Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes. Michaelsen, Suiter and Williamson, along with Allison Buck, Jeanne Fairchild, Sarah Kwasigroch, Lisa Meeter and Gayle Tripp were named to the MWC Fall 2008 All-Academic Team.
This is the fourth time the Lobos have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award - 2003-04, 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2008-09.
