ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - With their backs against the wall, the Lobos rallied from an 0-2 deficit to defeat the New Mexico alumni, 3-2. The fifth and deciding game was tied at 13 when senior Kelly Therkelsen put down a kill and then blocked Nicole Ryan's attack to clich the victory.

"I saw a lot of good things tonight," head coach Kelley McKee said. "Figuring out how to work together and a higher level to defeat the alumni was a highlight. It's a good starting point and I cannot wait for the season to start."

In game three, freshmen Allison Suiter and Anna Lehne stepped up to lead the Lobos to a 30-26 win. Suiter hit .400 (3K-1E-5TA) with two blocks while Lehne put down four kills with two aces and a block.

Sophomore Joelle Ingram dominated in game four, guiding the Lobos to a 30-27 victory. The team was trailing 25-27 when Ingram slammed down a kill, putting the ball in her hands. She served up an ace, an attack error on the alumni and three kills from her teammates to push the match to five games. In the game, Ingram produced seven kills with just one error on 11 attacks, hitting .544. Lehne stayed redhot, hitting .300 (5K-2E-10TA) with three blocks while sophomore Sarah Kwasigroch also stuffed back three attackes and handed out 14 assists.

Trailing 9-11 in game five, Therkelsen's leadership abilities shined as she killed the ball, rallying the team. Two attack errors by the alumni fired up the Lobos even more as Therkelsen took it upon herself to clinch the match.

Overall, Therkelsen led the team with 14 kills, five aces and six blocks. Lehne added 12 kills, 12 digs and six blocks while Ingram put down 11 kills and seven blocks. Kwasigroch dished out 42 assists with seven blocks and sophomore Gayle Tripp recorded a team-high 16 digs. Assistant coach Lisa Beauchene led the alumni team, hitting .421 (12K-4E-19TA) with 38 assists, 17 digs and one block.

"We need to work on our work ethic from the start of the match to the finish," McKee said. "We have a specific system we are teaching the team and we need them to trust it, step on the court and execute it.

The Lobos return to the court Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. vs. Utah State as they host the Hilton Albuquerque Volleyball Classic. UC Riverside and Stephen F. Austin will kick off the tournament at 4:30 p.m.
