Jennifer Williams scored the Lobos first goal of the season. New Mexico held ISU without a shot the entire first half of play and out shot the Bengals 14-8 in the match. The Lobos improve to 1-0-0 on the season while the Bengals fall to 0-1-0.
"We had a lot of first game jitters but we found a way to win," said head coach Kit Vela. "This is a sign of a good team in the making. A lot of young players got on the field tonight which is good. It was great to get a good look at a lot of freshmen tonight."
The Lobos got on the board first as Williams took a nice ball over the top from sophomore midfielder Nicole Reed. Williams was able to force ISU goalkeeper off her line and beat her near post for her first goal of the season in the 12th minute of the match.
Senior Jess Quador showed her determination and came away with her first goal of her Lobo career. The Littleton, Colo. native took a cross from fellow Senior Veronika Strnadova and fired her first shot. The ball bounced off the hands of ISU keeper Bailey Williams and right on the strong right foot of Quador who put the ball away. Quador's goal came in the 88th minute and sealed the deal for the Lobos.
Redshirt freshman Kelli Cornell picked up the first win of her young career in her first career start as well as her first career shutout.
Sophomore Gianna Cavuoto made her first career start for the Lobos at the centerback position.
The Lobos hit the road to the UNLV Nike Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. on Sept. 4-6. The Lobos will take on Cal-State Bakersfield Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m. MT and Illinois State Sept. 6 at 11:30 a.m. MT. For more information please visit www.GoLobos.com.
