ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico women's soccer recently concluded the spring season with an Alumni Celebration on April 27-29. The three-day event was highlighted by a strong support from the alumni and current Lobos. UNM held an alumni game and banquet to conclude the weekend.
"The Alumni Celebration was a big success and something that we would like to continue to build upon in the future," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "We always like to recognize the alumni and make sure they continue to be part of our success. This senior class was a great foundation for this program and it was exciting to see them finish their careers with consecutive winning seasons. The future is bright and we are appreciative of the support from the alumni and fans."
Game Night kicked of the event Friday with a fundraiser that raised nearly $2,000. The event was a big success with various games and activities for both current and former players along with their families.
Saturday's alumni game had a strong turnout of 15-18 former student-athletes to compete against current Lobos. The game was entertaining and created a fun, family atmosphere drawing strong fan support for both sides. Following the game, the alumni hosted a barbecue dinner.
The weekend was rounded out with the banquet Sunday with more than 60 people in attendance. The banquet celebrated the 2006 season and the numerous accomplishments on and off the field. UNM also honored the seven seniors for their hard work and dedication throughout their careers. The seniors honored included Alanna Abeyta, Kaela Kelly, Eryn Paetz, Kristine Sweat, Bridgette Sanchez, Ashley Lowery and Kellee Hafner.
The Coaches' Award went to Hafner, recognizing her for her hard work, dedication, determination and attitude throughout her career. Hafner played in 52 games while at UNM and started 15. She recorded three goals in her career, an assist and seven points.
The alumni event is put on by the women's soccer program and is looking to be an annual gathering.
