ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Indiana State freshman Darcy Wood hurled 12 long innings before her teammates finally put her in postion for the win. The Sycamores (5-7) downed the Lobos (5-15) 8-4 in 12 innings.
The Lobos scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Freshman Christina Rios grounded right to the short stop and reached first safely, allowing sophomore Ryanne Hodgins to advance to third. Hodgins took home on a throwing error by the ISU short stop.
The Sycamores got the run back in the fourth, which was led off by Jackie Chomicki, who drew a walk. Chomicki took second and third on two sac bunts before being rewarded with a walk home off an illegal pitch by sophomore Caley Peterson.
New Mexico regained the lead in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Becky Dover hit a key two-out single to left field. Freshman Ashley Allen followed with a RBI double down the left field line for the 2-1 lead.
Indiana State rallied in the seventh thanks to Alyssa Duncan, who pinch hit for Elle Fracker. Duncan singled up the middle to driving home the tying run in Natalie Kopp. The Sycamores took the lead in the 11th, putting two runs up on the board behind Jessica McGivney's home run and a RBI double from Kopp that drove home Lacey Frankland.
Senior Ashley Shartzer refused to have the game end like that. Junior Kristina Schmallen led off the bottom of the 11th with a single which set up Shartzer for the two-run bomb she sent sailing well over the left center field fence.
But Indiana State's offense finally put things together in the 12th, scoring four runs on four hits. Melissa Biniewicz had a huge one-out double to left and scored on an error by Rios, who was trying to get Chomicki out at first. Still with one out and the bases loaded, Frankland singled to center to score Chomicki. Kopp followed with a single to drive in Ashley Trover. Yvette Tovar capped the inning with a bases loaded walk that brought home McGivney.
Wood improved to 4-3 with her nine-hit complete game. She allowed three earned runs, one walk and struck out nine. Senior Ashley Perkins took the loss, throwing 7.1 innings for four earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Peterson threw four innings to start the game, giving up two hits, one earned run and one walk. Junior Katie Gregg threw two-thirds of an inning in relief, allowing three hits, two earned runs, two walks and one strikeout.
Game two of the doubleheader was cancelled due to Indiana State's travel plans.
