Nordic Skiers Open Season This Weekend

The University of New Mexico Ski Team will begin competion in the 2003-04 season with a NorAm - Federation of International Skiers Nordic meet in West Yellowstone, Mont. on November 28-29. Nordic coach Fredrik Landstedt will lead the Lobos against the top skiers in the U.S., the Canadian national team, and the Unviersity of Utah in what amounts to an exhibition race. The men will have a 15K Freestyle race on Friday and a 15K Classic race on Saturday, while the women will have a 10K Freestyle race on Friday and a 10K Classic race on Saturday.

The Lobo Alpine team will begin racing on December 6 with a FIS Giant Slalom race in Winter Park, Colo. Head Ski Coach George Brooks is entering his 34th year as the head coach of the Lobos. He holds the longest current tenure of any member of the Lobo athletics department. UNM finished in fourth place at the 2003 NCAA Championships for the second year in a row, and had six All-Americans. Their first collegiate meet is the Utah Invitational on January, 11, 2004. New Mexico will host the Lobo Invitational on February 6-7, 2004 in Taos and Red River, N.M.
