The University of New Mexico men's golf team is in sixth place at the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern University today. The Lobos are 7-over par (288-287=575) after 36 holes at the par-71 Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. Junior Jon Sauer leads the way at 3-under for UNM after posting a 139 through the first two rounds. Kent State leads the team race at 9-under (282-277=559) and is the only squad under par. Northwestern's David Lipsky currently leads the individuals with a 5-under, 137 total (70-67) after two rounds.

Sauer is tied for second place after posting his best two scores as a Lobo. He was on fire in the opening round, dropping in birdies on the first three holes in the morning 18. He made the turn at 2-under, but bogeyed No. 11 and 12 to drop back to even par. Another birdie on the 428-yard par-4 15th moved him to 1-under for his first round of 70. Sauer's second round was more steady, with just one bogey on the final hole of the day. He birdied 3, 9, and 10 to post a 2-under score of 69.

Both senior Robb Bierbaum and junior Steve Saunders are tied for 31st at 3-over. Both players totaled 145 by posting rounds of 72 and 73. Sophomore Kyle Nielsen is tied for 42nd with a 6-over total of 148 (76-72) in his first action of the season. Nielsen played his last 11 holes of the day at 2-under. Sophomore Brandon Putnam is tied for 56th at 9-over (74-77) on the day. His second round was ruined by a double-bogey on the 424-yard par-4 fifth hole and a triple bogey on the 425-yard par-4 18th.

"We played some solid golf today," stated UNM head coach Glen Millican. "Nothing spectacular, just a couple of very solid rounds. If we can get more of the same tomorrow, I am sure we could move up the leaderboard."

Sauer's 69 in the second round is the first sub-70 round for any Lobo this season. The Lobos' first round of 288 and second round of 287 are the two lowest 18-hole team totals of the season.

The Lobos will play the third and final round tomorrow with tee times beginning at 6:45 a.m. (M.D.T.). Live scores will again be available on GolfStat.com via GoLobos.com.
