ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- Junior Bret Fanning and junior-transfer Justin Howard each collected two hits and two RBIs en route to the Big Red Machine's 9-4 win over the Silver Slammers in the Game 5 of the 2008 Cherry & Silver Fall Baseball Classic.
The duo helped the Machine put up five runs in the first two innings, giving Cherry a lead it would not relinquish. After senior Mike Brownstein was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first, Howard laced an RBI double to right. Fanning, who started the game in right and reached base in all three of his at-bats, followed with a run scoring single to plate Howard and give the Machine a 2-0 lead.
The Silver Slammers, who clinched the series on Thursday, tacked on a run in the top of the second with an RBI single by Ryan Honeycutt.
The Big Red Machine, which had a total of 11 hits, quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame. Freshman Zach Carlson led off with a single, advanced to second on a Brownstein groundout, and scored via a single from senior Max Willett. Howard followed with a RBI triple to right center and scored with a single off the bat of Fanning to up the lead to 5-1.
Brownstein and Chris Juarez each had solo shots to left for the Big Red Machine.
The Machine was backed by solid pitching, allowing only four hits. Starter John Hesketh collected the win after three innings of work. Transfer Travis Dirk pitched an impressive seventh, striking out two.
