LAS VEGAS, N.V.--- As the University of New Mexico men's tennis team continued its second day of regional competition Thursday at the Darling Tennis Center. The Lobos claimed five single wins off the day, as well as several doubles victories. The wins will advance the team to the round of 32 in singles and the quarterfinals in doubles.
Lobo Jadon Phillips claimed his first win of the USTA/ITA regional tournament Thursday morning, going three sets against Boise State's Freddy Walsh. The sophomore won the match, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, and will next face No.17 seed Johannes Markel of UNLV.
New Mexico junior Ben Dunbar, after receiving a bye in the first round, went on to steadily defeat opponent David Flodberg of Northern Arizona, 6-4, 6-3. His next match will be against Western New Mexico's Kyle Lynch Friday morning.
Lobo junior Phil Anderson's first win came over Utah State's David Hintze. Anderson's 6-1, 7-5 triumph advanced him to the next round against Armando Morales from New Mexico State.
Carl Ho's was granted a first-round bye as well. The Lobo took on Utah's Matthew Cowley in the second round, sweeping past the Ute, 6-2, 6-3, and is pitted against Carl Kuschke of Montana in round three.
The Lobos' final singles' win of the day came from Conor Berg. The sophomore's first match was postponed on Wednesday, but he more than made up for the delay, picking up two wins on Thursday. He cruised in his first set against Montana's Mike Facey, 6-0, but struggled for the win in his second set, eventually squeaking out a 7-5 decision. Berg had an easier go in his second match of the day, thumping Felipe Frattini of New Mexico State, 6-4, 6-2.
The round of 32 will commence Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. MST.
In doubles, three Lobo teams were victorious in both their second and third rounds, advancing them to the quarterfinals.
The top seeded duo of Berg and Dunbar overpowered both of their opponents on Thursday, facing teams from Idaho and Northern Arizona. They started the day with an 8-5 win against Jose Bendeck and Alan Shin. Berg and Dunbar played even better when they defeated Bruno Ferreira and Hugo Ramadier, 8-2.
Ho and Wood also scored a pair of wins for the Lobos. The duo claimed a close 8-6 win over No.3 seeded Andrew Landerwerlen Jens Vorkefeld. Their next match against No.12 seed Bryan Marchant and Sven Poslusny came with a little more ease. The Lobos took the match, 8-2.
Continuing on their singles winning streak, the team of Anderson and Phillips, seeded No. 5, also won both of their doubles matches. They won their first match against Air Force's Stephen Katrein and Alex Lineberry, 8-3. They had a tougher go against No.11 Mehdi Bouras and Kasper Konyves, winning 9-7.
The doubles quarterfinal matches will begin Friday 9:00 a.m. MST.
