TEMPE, Ariz. - In a collective effort, the New Mexico softball team knocked off No. 20 Arizona State, 8-6 at the Fiesta Bowl Softball Tournament being hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. The Lobos, 2-0 at the Fiesta Bowl, are now 4-3 on the season.
The Lobos managed 13 hits for eight runs, seven earned against the Sun Devils. Leading the way was senior Sabrina Sandberg with her two-run home run in the third. Freshman Robyn Hutson went 3-4 while senior Ora Hensley was 2-3. Juniors Ashley Shartzer and Cassie Chavez each doubled in the game. Shartzer finished the game 2-3 including a sacrifice bunt.
Starting the game for the Lobos was junior Ashley Perkins. Perkins pitched two innings, giving up three hits, three runs and walking one. Sophomore Iraina Ogas got the win, pitching 4.1 innings. Ogas allowed seven hits, two runs and two walks while striking out two. Senior Amy Dumas got the save, hurling 0.2 innings. Dumas pitched perfectly, striking out both batters she faced.
New Mexico takes to the field tomorrow, facing Nevada at 11:30 a.m. and No. 18 Texas A&M at 5:30 p.m. PST.
