TUCSON, Ariz. - The New Mexico softball team had a successful trip to Tucson, Ariz. where it competed in the University of Arizona Fall Invitational October 24-25. The women came home with a 4-2-1 record, ending the fall season 8-2-1.
The Lobos opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Phoenix College. Pitching for New Mexico was junior Ashley Perkins and sophomore Iraina Ogas. The second game of the double header with Phoenix College resulted in a 1-1 tie. The lone Lobo pitcher in the game was senior Amy Dumas.
New Mexico then went on a three-game win streak, starting with a 7-1 win over Central Arizona behind the arm of Ogas. Pima Community College was the second victim of a 6-0 beating. Senior center fielder Sabrina Sandberg led the Lobos with her home run and Dumas earned the win. The third win was a 6-1 victory over the HUM Babe Cats. Junior Kelli Edelbrock homered for the Lobos. Perkins, Dumas and Ogas all pitched for New Mexico.
The University of Arizona ended the Lobos streak with an 8-0 win. Pitching for New Mexico was Ogas and Dumas.
The Lobos ended the tournament on a high note behind their 3-2 win over Arizona Western. Freshman catcher Robyn Hutson hit her first home run in a Lobos uniform and freshman Irene Weik made her first appearance on the mound for New Mexico. Also pitching in the win was Perkins and Ogas.
New Mexico picks up right the spring season right where the fall left off, Feb. 6-8. The Lobos will be competing at the University of Arizona Pepsi Classic in Tucson, Ariz. Other participants will be Arizona, Mississippi, Cal State Northridge and UNLV.
