ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - It was a valiant effort by the New Mexico volleyball team (4-6) but the Cal State Fullerton Titans were triumphant with a 3-0 blanking of the Lobos. With the win, Cal State Fullerton claims the Comcast Lobo Invitational title and the Lobos place second.
After trading the first four points of game one, the Lobos committed three errors, giving the Titans the slight advantage they needed to run away to the 30-13 win.
New Mexico hung with Cal State Fullerton longer in game two, swapping points to a 12-12 tie. Four straight Titan kills broke the tie and CSF never looked back, going on to the 30-21 win.
The roles were reversed to start game three with Cal State Fullerton committing five attack errors on its first eight attempts, giving UNM a 6-3 lead. But the Titans surged back, winning the final game 30-21.
Sophomore Jeanne Fairchild led the team with eight kills while freshman Rose Morris added seven. Fairchild made the all-tournament team along with freshman Anna Lehne, who recorded five kills, nine digs and two blocks. Sophomore Sarah Kwasigroch dished out 21 assists while classmate Gayle Tripp posted a team-high 16 digs.
The Lobos return to the court Monday evening in the Johnson Center, hosting I-25 rival New Mexico State at 7 p.m.
