IRVINE, California - The New Mexico women's soccer team fell to Cal State-Fullerton 2-0, in their final game of the Nike Classic Tournament hosted by UC-Irvine.
"It wasn't our best game," said head coach Kit Vela. "We held them 1-0 for a majority of the game. We just didn't have enough left in the end."
Fullerton's Kandace Wilson scored the first goal just 9:05 into the game on a breakaway feed from Erin Shelton. The Titans final goal came at the 78:54 minute mark when Allison Bowman headed in the ball off a throw-in by Wilson.
Junior goalkeeper Kristen Winters made five saves for the Lobos on 7 Titan shots on goal. Fullerton outshot New Mexico 15-4 with the Lobos only having two shots on goal.
"We had four or five freshman on the field at all times," Vela said. "Plus, we had a few women suffering injuries from Friday's brutal game. But we played hard and are getting better."
"We played two top tier teams in the country this weekend," Vela said.
New Mexico falls to 0-2-1 overall while CSU-Fullerton improves to 3-0.
The Lobos return to the field this Friday for their first home game of the season. They face Northern Colorado at 6 p.m.
