UNM Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez

Opening Statement:

"I'm really proud of those seniors, I'm really proud of that group of four. They've been through a lot, they gave me their best every single time and for that I'm grateful. We have at least one more game left coming up, we want it to be more than that, but regardless those seniors will always be ambassadors for this program and they'll be Lobos for life."

Your team seems to play really well in Vegas during the Mountain West, why do you think that is?

"I think we have a history and tradition and Coach Flanagan is really the one who started that in the early years. Our fan base is incredible and when you draw more of a crowd than the home team that makes it a lot of fun. It's like the Pit west and we've had a lot of success there. It's a fun time of year, our kids look forward to it and sometimes something magical happens. Now we can't just show up and say `okay we're in Vegas,' we've got to work. We'd like to win three games in a row just like the other eight teams."

How do you feel about the seeding you got this year?

"It's fine you know, you have to win, and it doesn't matter who you play, in order to get to the NCAA Tournament. There is no easy road, there is no easy side of the bracket and we have to play a very difficult UNLV team who we haven't beaten this year. Second round will either be Nevada, Air Force or San Diego State. Again, all three teams have given us trouble and obviously SDSU is very good so you just can't look past that first game. I know UNLV is thinking about what happened last year in the first round, I know our kids are motivated because they're thinking about what happened this year and it's just going to be a good game."

The last ten minutes of this game seemed like you had a team out there that was different than the team who played the first 30 minutes, talk about that...

"I think I stopped strangling them. It's a tough thing. Senior day is just tough because it's a lot of emotions. Everybody wants to play perfectly for the seniors. I have great group of kids because they all care about each other. It was getting close to getting away from us. I think I looked up and we were down by 10 with seven minutes left and I just told them that it was their time. They did a nice job those last seven minutes, we got a flow in, we stopped them, we made shots and Deeva Vaughn was absolutely phenomenal today. She had some help though, it was a team effort and I'm very proud. Air Force is a good team, they beat UNLV this year so it's not like Air Force is a bad team. They had us on the ropes so I'm proud of the team for coming back and getting that."

Junior forward Deeva Vaughn

On what inspired the Lobos' better/solid play in the last 10 minutes of the game...

"We knew Air Force was a good, scrappy team and that they would never give up. We had to determine every four minutes what our motive was to stop them and to get offensive boards and outrebound them, and really push hard. We wanted to destine our fate for this game. Coach Sanchez left it in our hands to determine the outcome."

On what the team will work on before leaving for the Mountain West tournament in Las Vegas...

"We'll definitely focus on stopping Kelli Thompson (UNLV). She's the one that has been killing us with 20-plus points our last two games with them. This is our opportunity and the third time is the charm, so we're just going to work really hard when we come back on Monday and beat them."

On why she thinks the Lobos play well in Las Vegas...

"It's like The Pit West. All of our fans go and so I think it doesn't matter what the atmosphere is, as long as our Lobos are there to support us - no matter who's house we're in, it feels like it's our home."

On her and Dymond James competing and whether or not getting fired up like that helps her play better...

"Yeah, that's what everyone was saying. It's not my intentions, but I had to put my foot down. I hadn't really had to deal with that all year, so it was kind of different."

Senior guard Caroline Durbin

On whether or not the Lobos were distracted due to senior day...

"I think we had a little bit of a slow offensive start. We weren't aggressive enough. Our defense was pretty good, but offensively we didn't get in a rhythm for a while."

On what was going through her mind as she walked down The Pit ramp before the game...

"Basically, if I had any emotions I tried not to think about it because I didn't want to get emotional or anything. I kind of just tried to block it out and focus on everyone else get ready for the game. "

On whether or not she was surprised at how Air Force battled with them today...

"I am a little bit. They're always a hard-working team--extremely hard work, more so than anyone else in the conference. They really executed well today and they slowed us down on offense. That's a credit to them, their scouting report was really good, but eventually we had some runs and Deeva really, really helped us get this win."
