LAS CRUCES, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico men's tennis team opened their season Friday at the New Mexico State University Fall Invitational. In the first day of the tournament the squad picked up two wins, one in singles and the other in the doubles consolation.

In his first singles match of the day, Lobo freshman Evan Corona-Saunders defeated Cody McCarthy of Abilene Christian University in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, and 6-3.

After a doubles loss against duo Hatch/Joyner from Abilene Christian, Corona-Saunders and teammate Simon Hegelund regrouped and defeated Belin/Romero from Western New Mexico in one set, 8-2.

UNM's Matthew Neeld fell to Northern Arizona University's top singles player, Andy Reiff, in a tough, three set match, 3-6, 7-5, and 6-2. Lobo Simon Hegelund lost to Josh Brown from NAU in two sets (6-4 and 6-3).

In doubles, Neeld and partner Mads Hegelund lost to Floodberg/Ramadier from NAU, 9-7.

Mads Hegelund's first singles match was postponed Friday afternoon. The macth will be played tomorrow against Luis Ramirez from NMSU.

Although it was not the day the Lobos had hoped for in their season opener, UNM assistant coach Bart Scott says there are positives to be taken away from the day.

"We did learn a lot and got better," Scott said of the matches. "That's what it's all about. The guys were excited and fought hard."

The tournament continues tomorrow and Sunday.
