ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's basketball team will open the Mountain West Conference season on the road Saturday, January 17, at Air Force. The Lobos enter the contest after a 78-35 win over New Mexico Highlands to move to 8-5 on the season, while the Falcons enter the game 3-10. Tipoff is set for 2:00 PM at Clune Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
TODAY'S GAME: Today's game features the Lobos of the University of New Mexico against the Falcons of the Air Force Academy in the opening game for both teams in the Mountain West Conference season.
SCOUTING THE LOBOS: The Lobos are coming off a win at home over New Mexico Highlands. UNM is currently 8-5 with losses to No. 3 Texas, Villanova, South Carolina, San Francisco and Arizona and wins over Southern Cal, Cal State Fullerton, Youngstown State, Texas Southern, Tennessee State and New Mexico State. The Lobos are led in scoring and rebounding by junior forward Lindsey Arndt with 10.2 ppg and 7.7 rpg. Following Arndt is senior Melissa Forest and junior Mandi Moore with 8.0 and 7.7 ppg, respectively. Leading UNM in assists is Moore with 3.4 apg.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS: The Air Force Falcons open conference play with a record of 3-10 and are coming off a tough loss on the road to Weber State. The Falcons have notched wins over New Mexico Highlands, Northern Colorado and Portland all at home, while losing to Navy, Army, IUPUFW, Illinois-Chicago, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, New Orleans, Illinois State, Boise State and Texas Pan American. AFA is led in scoring by Letricia Castillo at 13.6 ppg. Joining Castillo in double figures is Shawna Neff at 11.8 ppg and Amoy Jackson at 10.4 ppg. Leading the Falcons on the boards is Neff at 6.1 rpg, while Jennifer Roesch leads Air Force in assists with 3.7 a game.
THE COACHES: UNM is led by head coach Don Flanagan in his ninth season at New Mexico. Flanagan is 176-86 at UNM. Air Force is led by Ardie McInelly who is in her third season with the Falcons and eighth season overall. McInelly is 14-55 at Air Force and 91-117 in her career.
THE SERIES: New Mexico and Air Force will be meeting for the 14th time with the Lobos holding a commanding 12-1 series edge. The Falcons only win came in the first meeting between the two teams in 1992 and UNM has won every meeting since.
