TUCSON, Ariz. --- Daniel Gonzalez and Ryan Honeycutt combined for four hits, two runs and three RBI for the University of New Mexico baseball team on Tuesday night at Jerry Kindall Field, but it wasn't enough as host Arizona won, 9-3. The two teams will wrap up the 2009 series on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. (MDT), four hours earlier than originally scheduled.
The Lobos (28-9) struck first with a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Honeycutt followed up a Dane Hamilton triple with a single up the middle to push Hamilton across the plate for the game's first score.
Arizona (15-16) answered in the bottom of the first when Bryce Ortega scored on a Wildcat groundout, 1-1.
The Wildcats broke the tie in the second inning when Shaun Cooper scored on a double play by the Lobos. Lobo starter Bobby Moore hit the next two batters to load the bases before being relieved by Ryan Escarcega. Escarega hit the first UA batter he faced to bring in the second run of the inning before getting the third out, 3-1.
UA tacked on one more run in the third and the fourth innings to take a 5-1 lead.
New Mexico cut the Wildcat lead to 5-3 by the end of the sixth inning with a solo home run to left field by Gonzalez in the fifth and a solo shot, also to left, by Honeycutt in the sixth.
But that was as close as UNM would get as Arizona added four more runs over the seventh and eighth innings for the final, 9-3.
Moore (4-2) took the loss for the Lobos, while Joe Allison (2-0) earned the win in his first collegiate start at Arizona.
