The University of New Mexico men's soccer team ended its spring season with a 4-2 loss against Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids in Denver, Colo. today. The Lobos got a pair of goals from rising senior Jack Smithson in the losing effort, moving their spring record to 4-1-1. New Mexico will now turn its focus to the 2008 regular season opener against San Diego on August 29.
Smithson opened the scoring in the 10th minute with his first goal of the spring. His second strike came in the 75th minute of play. Colorado got goals from Mehdi Ballouchy, Jacob Peterson, Omar Cummings and Jovan Kirovsky.
"We played well at times but they were very good today," stated UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein. "It was a good way to end a strong spring season for us. We gained a lot of confidence with some of our wins, but we also were shown the areas we need to improve. To post the record we did without five of our main players was a solid accomplishment for our program."
New Mexico played the entire spring without Dominique Romero, Eric Staver, Ryan Farquharson, Andrew Parson and David Murphy, but were still able to post solid results against excellent competition. Chris Wright led the team with three goals, while Smithson added two goals and a pair of assists in the six matches. Justin Fite was excellent in goal as the only healthy keeper on the Lobo roster. UNM outscored its opponents 12-6 in the six matches.
UNM opens the season in the Loyola Marymount Invite on August 29-31. The Lobos' home opener is set for September 5 against Michigan State at the UNM Soccer Complex. For season tickets, fans can contact the UNM Ticket Office at (505) 925-LOBO or toll free at 800 955-HOWL.
