Box Score |  Nov. 2 Lobos vs. BYU

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild recorded 16 kills Friday night at the Johnson Center, but it wasn't enough to stop BYU as the Cougars won, 30-28, 30-26, 30-22.

"We talked earlier in the week about who wants it the most," said Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson. "BYU has seniors out there and they are battling. I'm disappointed with our team. We talked about it all week and we didn't put our money where our mouth is."

The Lobos battled through Game One, staying even with BYU until 26-26. Attack errors and a service error by the Lobos gave BYU a 29-27 lead. The Cougars finished the game on a kill by Rachel Dyer, 30-28.

Game Two started out positively with UNM taking a 3-1 lead. But BYU held serve for a 4-0 run to build a 9-5 lead. The Lobos battled back, closing to within one at 16-15 on a BYU attack error. BYU kept the Lobos at arms length at 24-18. UNM was able to close the gap, again, at 28-26, but a Lobo attack error and a kill by Dyer gave BYU the win 30-26.

BYU took a 7-3 lead in Game Three but UNM got back in the hunt with a kill by Lisa Meeter at 11-9. Kelsi Phillips held serve to put the Lobos ahead 13-11 on a 4-0 run. BYU got the lead back at 17-16. UNM stayed within one or two points up to 23-21. Then BYU went on a 5-0 run to build the lead to 28-21. A service error by the Lobos and a kill by Bryn Porter gave BYU the match, 30-22.

In addition to Fairchild's 16 kills, Meeter had 12 kills in the match. Jade Michaelsen had 29 assists to go along with 11 from Sarah Kwasigroch.

Gayle Tripp had 14 digs on the night, upping her career total to 1,074. She is 40 away from moving into second place on the Lobo all-time career digs list.

The Lobos (15-9, 6-6 MWC) will host Utah on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Johnson Center. Match time is 7 p.m. Utah lost to TCU on Friday night, 3-0, to remain tied with the Lobos for fifth place in the Mountain West at 6-6.
