2008-09 Season Notes

• This Week In UNM Skiing ... The Lobos will be competing in the 15th Annual University of Colorado/Laura Sharpe Flood Memorial Ski Invitational ... Alpine events will be held at Eldora Ski Resort (LaBelle Trail) on Jan. 14-15 with an additional NCAA slalom qualifier on Jan. 16. Giant slalom will be contested on the 14th, followed by the slalom on the 15th ... Nordic events will take place in Aspen with the classic races on Jan. 16 at the Aspen High School course, followed by the freestyle races on Jan. 17 on the Owl Creek Chase course at the Snowmass Cross Country Center.

• Overall Team Notes ... The Lobos 2nd-place team finish at the UAA Invitational is the highest team finish for the Lobos since the 2006 NCAA Championships (2nd) ... Several Lobos battled illness last week in Alaska, including women's Nordic skier Polina Ermoshina who missed the first race of her collegiate career on Jan. 5.

• Alpine Notes ... Freshman Petter Brenna made the most of his collegiate debut by winning the Seawolf men's slalom on Jan. 10 and placing second in the UAA slalom the next day. Earlier in the week he was earning FIS points, a giant slalom win, and three top-10 finishes in four races at the Nor-Am Cup in Sunday River, Maine, site of the 2009 NCAA Championships ... Sophomore Estelle Pecherand-Charmet won the UAA women's slalom and took 3rd in the giant slalom ... Freshman Nikolai Herlofson Finne won the UAA men's giant slalom and placed 6th in the slalom to go along with two additional top-10 finishes in the Seawolf SL (5th) and GS (9th) ... Sophomore Thomas Schwab tied his career-best finish with a 5th in the UAA giant slalom ... Junior Gary Beresford bettered his career-mark with a 25th-place finish in the UAA GS ... Senior Karin Ohlin set a career-best 11th finish in the giant slalom ... Freshman Jacqueline Hangl recorded top-4 finishes in the Seawolf GS (4th) and UAA SL (3rd) ... Freshman Stefanie Demetz did well in her debut as well with top-6 finishes in the Seawolf (6th) and UAA (4th) GS ... Freshman Sofie Hjorth will apply for a medical hardship after tearing an ACL during preseason training.

• Nordic Notes ... Simon Reissmann posted his first career collegiate win in the Seawolf men's 15K freestyle race on Jan. 11. The sophomore from Germany posted four top-10 finishes on the week with a 1st and 2nd in both freestyle races, along with a career-best 4th (Seawolf) and 10th in classical races ... Sophomore Martin Kaas had a career-meet in the UAA with 11th-place finishes in the classical and freestyle, both career-best marks ... Junior Tor-Hakon Hellebostad set a career-best with a 10th-place finish in the Seawolf freestyle ... Senior Rick Grahn set a career-mark with a 20th-place finish in the UAA freestyle ... Freshman Christoffer Callesen was the top finisher for the Lobos in the UAA men's classical in 7th place ... Junior Polina Ermoshina bounced back from the bug that has been going around to tied her career-mark in the classical with a 2nd-place finish in the UAA race.

• RMISA Skiers of the Meet will be released before the Colorado Invitational on Wednesday.
