FORT WORTH, Texas – The Lobos fell to the Horned Frogs 6-2 Sunday afternoon in Fort Worth. The loss gave the conference series to TCU, as the Horned Frogs took two of three from the Lobos over the weekend.
The Lobos struggled to find their offensive rhythm throughout the game, as TCU’s starting pitcher Steven Maxwell proved to be more than they could handle. Maxwell recorded his first-career complete game, holding the Lobos to two runs on nine hits while striking out eight in TCU’s 6-2 victory. UNM’s left fielder Luke Campbell did his best to put a damper on Maxwell’s day, as he smacked a solo home run to left in the ninth right before Campbell finished his complete game. Campbell’s homer was too little too late for the Lobos, however, as that would be the final run UNM would score before losing the game.
UNM was the team to strike first in the game, as freshman center fielder Sam Wilson lead off the third inning by smoking a triple to right center off TCU’s Maxwell. Two batters later, sophomore shortstop Alex Allbritton hit a comebacker to the pitcher that brought Wilson home, giving the Lobos a 1-0 lead.
TCU answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore catcher Josh Elander pounded an RBI double to left, while junior center fielder Aaron Schultz followed with an RBI single that put TCU ahead 2-1 after four.
Lobos’ starting pitcher Rudy Jaramillo would be replaced in the seventh, after allowing six runs, five earned, on 10 hits to go along with two strikeouts. Richard Olson came on to replace Jaramillo after TCU recorded one run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, putting them ahead, 5-1. With two out and one on, TCU’s Elander drove in the Horned Frogs second run of the inning by hitting an RBI single to left off Olson. The run would be credited to Jaramillo because the base runner was his before Olson came on. TCU would come out of the seventh with a 6-1 lead.
Neither team would score in the eighth. The Lobos added one final run in the ninth, on Campbell’s homer, but it wasn’t enough as TCU won the game 6-2.
Junior second baseman Kyle 'Beep' Stiner did all he could for the Lobos on offense, as he had himself a great game going 3-for-4 with a double on the day. Wilson also had a nice offensive day for the Lobos as he went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
TCU’s Maxwell picks up the win for the Horned Frogs, while UNM’s Jaramillo will be credited with the loss.
The Lobos fall to 10-22 (5-4, MWC) after the loss, and the Horned Frogs improve to 22-10 (7-2, MWC) with the win.
UNM will next come back home to face Texas Tech in a midweek affair beginning at noon April 12 at Isotopes Park.
