WACO, Texas - The New Mexico volleyball team (1-5) battled to the very end but came up short against UALR at the Baylor Invitational. The Trojans beat the Lobos, 3-0.
UNM was trailing 3-0 in game one when freshman Kathleen Crawley dropped down a pair of service aces. The Lobos capitalized on six UALR errors, tying the game at 10. The teams traded points and with the score even at 28, the Trojan's Amila Barakovic had one of her match-high 17 kills to put the match at game point. The Lobo offense committed an attack error, giving UALR a 30-28 win.
Freshman Anna Lehne and senior Kelly Therkelsen got the Lobos started right in game two, building a 13-4 advantage. Lehne had three klls and two aces while Therkelsen added two kills on New Mexico's run. But Barakovic and Anita Bucur were unstoppable, putting down three aces and four kills, respectively, to tie the game at 21. Barakovic added two more kills and Bucur chipped in with one, giving the Trojans a lead en route to a 30-27 win.
The Lobos were trailing 8-4 in the beginning of game three when UALR committed two errors and sophomore Sarah Kwasigroch served up two aces to tie the game. Neither team held more than a two-point lead the rest of the way. With the game tied at 30, Barakovic put the match at game point with a kill. Teammate Anelia Petrova recorded an ace on her next serve, sealing the victory, 32-30.
Therkelsen led the team overall, hitting .333 on 14 kills and three errors in 33 attacks. She also had a team-high three aces. Lehne added 10 kills and a team-high three blocks. Kwasigroch dished out a team-leading 36 assists and sophomore Gayle Tripp led the team in digs with 21.
The Lobos look to avoid the sweep in Waco, Texas this evening, taking on Louisiana-Monroe at 5 p.m. CT.
