ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team got the 2009 season off to a good start with a 3-0 win over the University of Delaware in the first round of the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic. The Lobos beat the Blue Hens, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21. Earlier in the evening, UC Santa Barbara beat Portland State, 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18).
Both teams worked to get the start of season jitters out in the first set. The Lobos overcame a 3-0 deficit, tying the set at five on a Delaware attack error. UNM built up a 20-12 lead, but allowed Delaware to close to 22-18, on back-to-back service aces by Taos native Kelly Gibson. Senior captain Rose Morris sealed the win for UNM with a kill, 25-20.
In the second set, Lobo sophomore Amy Wong picked up two of UNM's three service aces to win the set, 25-13, holding serve for the final six Lobo points.
Junior Taylor Hadfield had five of her team-high 10 kills in the third set, as UNM held on to a 25-21 win.
Junior Lisa Meeter and senior Anna Lehne had seven kills each for the Lobos, while 2009 Mountain West Conference Preseason Co-Player of the Year Jade Michaelsen led the team with 25 assists. Allison Buck, taking over the starting libero position, recorded a team-high 17 digs.
Michaelsen moved closer to cracking the Lobos top 10 career assists list at 1,953. The junior from Tucson, Ariz., needs 35 on Saturday to move into 10th place, passing former Lobo All-American Pauline Manser with 1,987.
Lehne moved into a tie for 10th place on the UNM top 10 career total blocks list with 256. The middle blocker from Pueblo, Colo., had three blocks in the match. She needs four solo blocks to crack that top 10 career list and five block assists to make that career top 10.
Saturday's MCM Elegante schedule begins at 10:30 a.m. with UC Santa Barbara vs. Delaware, followed by UNM vs. Portland State at 1 p.m. The evening session begins at 5 p.m. with Delaware vs. Portland State, followed by UNM vs. UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m.
