LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Things finally went the Lobos way. The New Mexico softball team (1-7) picked up their first win of the season, beating Loyola 5-1 in the Troy Cox Classic hosted by New Mexico State.
Junior Katie Gregg (1-0) won her first game as a Lobo, tossing a complete game, allowing eight hits, no walks and struck out three. Kristen Cefalu took the loss, going four innings for five hits and three walks. Andrea Wise threw two innings of relief, giving up just one hit and struck out one.
Junior Cassie Chavez almost single-handedly forced the first run across the plate. Chavez walked to start the second inning then stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Three batters later, freshman Lindsey Elcess flied out to center field, giving Chavez enough time to scoot home.
The Ramblers got their lone run in the fifth when Lindsey O'Gean laid down a bunt that allowed Tara Miller to score.
Loyola outhit the Lobos, 8-6. Chavez led New Mexico going 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored. Hodgins was 2-for-3 with a RBI and one run scored. Miller was 2-for-3 with one run scored for Loyola.
The Lobos immediately followed this game with a meeting with Mountain West Conference rival Colorado State.
