AKRON, Ohio --- The University of New Mexico women's soccer team defeated Canisius College 3-1 in the season opener at the Caroline Pardee Invitational in Akron, Ohio. The Lobos dominated the match, scoring three unanswered goals and out-shooting the Griffs, 18-2. UNM improves to 1-0 on the year and advances to the championship game Sunday.

"We controlled the game and it was nice to play so many players," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "In the first half we were nervous but played much better in the second half. It was a good first game and we are looking forward to Sunday."

The Griffs (0-1) scored in the sixth minute and took an early 1-0 lead. UNM responded in the 16th minute when senior Bridgette Sanchez scored the game tying goal on a cross from senior Eryn Paetz.

The Lobos scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute, after senior Kaela Kelly found the back of the net. Sophomore Hannah Hand was credited with the assist on the goal by Kelly after setting up the play with a cross.

The final goal for UNM came in the last minute of the game. Junior Terryn Granados scored in the 89th minute on an assist from senior Kristine Sweat.

The Lobos will continue the Caroline Pardee Invitational Sunday in the championship match starting at 2:30 ET against Akron. Akron defeated the Citadel in the evening match 4-0 to complete day one of the tournament. Complete coverage of Lobos soccer can be found at www.GoLobos.com.
