ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The New Mexico women's basketball team held its first preseason scrimmage Saturday morning inside the Rudy Davalos Center. The Cherry squad rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to win 71-67. Lobo sophomore Sara Halasz led all scorers with 24 points despite playing for Silver. Junior Jessica Kielpinski chipped in 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Cherry to the victory. Seven Lobos reached double figures during the event that was closed to the public due to construction on The Pit.
Flanagan's Cherry squad was down by as much as 10 points in the second half but Kielpinski and senior Amy Beggin led the comeback. Kielpinski had 14 points in the second period while Beggin scored 12. Beggin finished the game with 16 points and seven assists. Sophomores Lauren Taylor and Porche Torrance each had 11 points for Cherry.
Halasz and Silver led the way during the first half. Halasz scored the first four points of the game and had 10 at the break. Senior Eileen Weissmann scored eight of her nine points in the first half. Silver shot 40 percent from the field in the opening period and led 28-24 at the half.
Senior Georonika Jackson had one of her most impressive scrimmages, scoring 13 points for Silver. Silver freshman Caroline Durbin showed her athleticism with 10 points and seven rebounds. Durbin was the only freshman to reach double figures.
Senior Valerie Kast had six blocks, six points and four rebounds battling down low.
Silver shot 47.4 percent from the field and 53.3 percent in the second half. Cherry only shot 38.5 percent for the game and 50 percent in the final 20 minutes.
