ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Juniors Chelsea Sondrup and Nicole Ryan both collected 15 kills as the New Mexico volleyball team swept Hartford in three games, 30-21, 30-25, 30-24, Friday night in the second match of the Albuquerque Marriott Lobo Volleyball Classic at the Johnson Center. UTEP defeated Weber State in four games (29-31, 30-20, 30-24, 30-20) in the first match of the evening.
The Lobos (4-4) hit a season-high .391 as the offense pounded the Hawks (3-7) for 50 kills on only 14 errors. Sondrup hit a career-high .722 (15K-2E-18TA) while Ryan hit a season-high .609 (15K-1E-23TA). UNM also racked up 10 team blocks, led by Sondrup with six block assists and Samie Weber and Jennifer Heasty, who each had four block assists. Senior Monica Meihack paced the offense with 39 assists.
New Mexico came out on fire in game one, hitting at a .467 clip with 18 kills. Ryan and Sondrup each had six kills in the first game. The game was tied at 14 apiece before the Lobos went on a 16-7 run to end the game.
It was more of the same in game two for UNM, as Ryan and Sondrup continued to feed the attack with five kills apiece. Neither team took more than a three-point lead until the 23-23 mark. The Lobos then went on a 7-2 run to claim the second game, fueled by a Ryan kill that ended the game at 30-25.
The Lobos didn't let up in game three, limiting the Hawks to a .000 attack percentage. Kelly Therkelsen, Ryan and Sondrup all put down four kills in the third game as UNM hit .400 for the game in the 30-24 win.
The Albuquerque Marriott Lobo Volleyball Classic continues with four matches on Saturday. Weber State (0-9) will meet Hartford at 10 a.m., while the Lobos match up against UTEP (4-2) at 12:30 p.m. The tournament concludes with UTEP vs. Hartford at 5 p.m. and Weber State vs. New Mexico at 7:30 p.m.
