ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico softball team has been busy getting ready for the spring season. Besides practice, the women have bonded together at different events to help build team chemistry and moral.
The team attended the Hall of Fame Banquet at the Sheraton Old Town Hotel on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Kent and Sarah Mathis of All Sports Trophies donated $2,000 to the softball program in the name of freshman Jackie Pacheco.
To celebrate head coach Kim Newbern's birthday on Wednesday, Sept. 24, the women suprised her with loads of entertainment. They decorated the field, had dizzy bat races, ate cake and demonstrated their batting skills on a pi?ata. To top off the excitement, Orbit, the Albuquerque Isotopes mascot, joined in the celebration. Not only did Orbit play games with the women, he danced for them too.
Besides the fun events, the team has been practicing hard for the upcoming season. Newbern said that practice has been wonderful. She said the women have gone above and beyond their expectations.
Coming Oct. 18-19, the women will host New Mexico Highlands and Eastern New Mexico for a series of scrimmages. Newbern says these games will give her the opportunity to put people in different positions. With six new players on the team, they will also use this time to help them get used to playing with each other.
The Lobos will play both the 18th and 19th at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. New Mexico then travels to Tucson, Ariz. to play six games Oct. 24-26.
