Lobos Open Season at Falcon Invitational This Weekend

OPENING DRIVE: The University of New Mexico men's golf team begins the 2007-08 season at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend. This the 39th Falcon Invitational and all 54 holes will be played on the Eisenhower Golf Club's Blue Course. Action begins on Saturday, Sept. 8, with 36 holes on the first day. The final round begins on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 8:15 a.m.

THE COURSE: The Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational will be played on the Blue Course at the Eisenhower Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Blue Course opened in 1959 and is named for former president Dwight D. Eisenhower, who took part in the dedication ceremony. The 7,301-yard, par 72 course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and was named the eighth-best college course in the nation by Golf Digest in 2006.

RESULTS: The results can be found on the University of New Mexico web site at www.GoLobos.com following the conclusion of competition on each day. No live scores will be available for this weekend's action.

LOBO PLAYERS: Lobo head coach Glen Millican will take juniors Steve Saunders, Jon Sauer, Guillermo Chavez and Jacob Lestishen and sophomore Brandon Putnam to the Falcon Invite. Saunders, Chavez and Putnam all played in the Falcon Invite last season with the JV squad. Chavez tied for 15th with a 1-under 215 (73-72-70) while Saunders (74-73-70) and Putnam (73-74-70) both shot 1-over to tie for 23rd.

NEW MEXICO FLAVOR: For the first time in head coach Glen Millican's tenure, there native New Mexicans will be in field for the Lobos. Junior Steve Saunders and sophomore Brandon Putnam are from Albuquerque. Junior Guillermo Chavez hails from Clovis.

GENE MIRANDA FALCON INVITATIONAL FIELD: The 39th annual Gene Miranda Flacon Invitational has a strong 18-team field that includes Air Force, Air Force JV, California, Colorado State, Iowa State, New Mexico, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, Colorado-Colorado Springs, Utah, Utah State, UTEP, Weber State, Wichita State, Wyoming and Xavier.

FALCON INVITATIONAL HISTORY: The Lobos are no strangers to the Eisenhower Course or the Falcon Invitational, having played in the event numerous times over the last few years. In 2006, the Lobo junior varsity team finished eighth out of 15 teams at the Falcon Invite with a team total of 869 (296-289-284, +5). Guillermo Chavez led New Mexico with a 1-under 215 (73-72-70) while Brandon Putnam (73-74-70) and Steve Saunders (74-73-70) were both 1-over at 217.
