ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico women's soccer head coach Kit Vela announced the signing of 13 student-athletes to national letters of intent on Thursday. The Lobos welcome five players from the states of New Mexico and California, while adding one each from Arizona, Colorado and Utah. Vela adds 13 standouts to an already talented roster and adds depth for 2008.

"This is a tremendous recruiting class with great athletic ability and true student-athletes," said Vela. "This is our most complete class, top to bottom, that we have ever recruited. This class allows us to finally have depth. We currently have a great group of 20 student-athletes in our program so adding 13 more makes us deeper and more talented at every position. This is a class of impact players and we expect some of them to be a factor this fall. I expect great things out of all 13 of these kids over the next four to five years."

At the forward position, UNM adds Natalie Jenks from Albuquerque (La Cueva), Jennifer Williams from Moreno Valley, Calif., (Canyon Springs), Roxie McFarland out of Ogden, Utah (Bonneville) and Alexandra Wodka from Nogales, Ariz., (Nogales). All have good speed and the ability to find the net.

"Their natural nose for the goal could prove to be very valuable for us this fall," said Vela. "They range in a variety of sizes but could be game changing players."

The midfield is the deepest group of this recruiting class with five players listed. Three of the midfielders are from Southern California in Nicole Reed from Whittier, Calif., (La Serna), Zaneta Wyne from Laguna Niguel, Calif., (Aliso Niguel) and Janelly Farias out of Moreno Valley, Calif., (Rancho Verde). Jael Fanning from Albuquerque (La Cueva) and Aurora, Colo., (Greenview) native Amanda Collins round out the midfield position.

"We were very lean in the midfield this year and we needed to add some very talented players and I feel like we did that," said Vela. "This group comes from all different backgrounds and have competed at the highest level both domestically and internationally. They have numerous accolades and have proven themselves against top ranked opponents."

The Lobos add three defenders all from New Mexico including Erin O'Brien from Edgewood, N.M. (Moriarty), Courtney Carpenter and Megan Carpenter both from Rio Rancho (Rio Rancho). This group joins a strong backline and a traditionally tough group of athletes.

"We have a disciplined backline and we wanted to bring in some young tough players and these players fit the mold," said Vela. "Defenders are hard to find and these three have what we need."

UNM added depth at the goalkeeper position with the signing of Kelli Cornell out of San Clemente, Calif. (San Clemente). Cornell has played for one of the top club teams in California and has received numerous awards and recognitions.

"Kelli is a tremendous athlete who plays for a great California club team," said Vela. "She has all the dynamics we were looking for in an up and coming goalkeeper. Kelli is the perfect fit for our program."

"We are a very particular type of program looking for student-athletes that fit our style of play. These kids fit our philosophy and they like what we are doing here at UNM. Our program has made a lot of strides in the last three years and the overall athletic department has taken steps to improving our facilities.

I'm very happy to welcome these 13 outstanding players to the Lobo family and for them to be apart of UNM women's soccer."
