HENDERSON, Nev. -- The sixth-ranked New Mexico women's golf team jumped out to a 15-stroke lead in the second round of the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 11) at the 6,194-yard Anthem Country Club. The Lobos shot even-par as a team for the second straight day to post a two-round total of 576 (288-288). No. 22 Tennessee is in second place (296-295-591) and No. 11 Oklahoma is in third (293-299-592).
Senior Katrina Leckovic (Burnaby, British Columbia) started the day in second place but jumped to first at the end after firing an even-72 in the second round. Leckovic (69-72-141) is one stroke ahead of Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum (70-72-142).
Sophomore Christine Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) had her best afternoon as a Lobo, carding a two-under 70 to sit only three strokes behind Leckovic in a tie for fifth place (74-70-144).
Junior Shannon Johnson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and freshman Ashley Rollins (Austin, Texas) are each in a tie for eighth place heading into the final round with a 4-over 176. Johnson (72-74) shot 2-over with one birdie in the second round, while Rollins (73-73) stayed at 1-over with two birdies.
Junior Kailin Downs (Bend, Ore.) jumped 12 spots to 24th (78-73-151) after improving her score by five strokes in the second round. Downs shot a 1-over 73 Tuesday after firing a 6-over 78 Monday.
