ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--- The Lobo men's tennis team began their last tournament of the fall season this Friday as they hosted the Balloon Fiesta Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. The tournament brought in eight teams from New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado competing in both singles and doubles.

Six Lobos competed, with five advancing to the second round. In a disappointing second round, only one Lobo won his match, pushing the rest to consolation matches for Saturday. UNM junior Carl Ho, No.1 seed and looking to win the tournament for the third time in a row, received a bye from his first round. In the second round he faced defeat from Alex Clinkerbeard of Denver. Clinkerbeard proved to be a tough match, winning in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

No. 3 seed UNM junior Phil Anderson also received a bye in his first round match. In the second round Anderson swiftly defeated Armando Morales of New Mexico State, 6-3, 6-2. In the quarterfinals he will be matched up against Lucas Marin-Salcedo of Air Force Saturday morning.

Neither of the "Lobros" received a bye in their first round, but both successfully won their first career home matches. Mads Hegelund, the older of the two brothers and a freshman at UNM, beat out competitor Travis Day of Northern Colorado, 6-1, 6-2. Ali Rizvi from the Air Force Academy defeated him in his second match, 6-3, 6-2. The other half of the Hegelund duo, Simon, also a UNM freshman, won his first match against Lorenzo Pineda from the New Mexico Military Institute, 6-3, 6-4. After putting up a strong fight in his second match, he fell to Ben Lantz of Northern Arizona, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

Joe Wood, UNM Senior, won his first match against William O'Connell from NMSU, 6-2, 6-2. He was then pitted against No.4 seed Hugo Ramadier of NAU where he lost, 6-2, 6-1.

UNM junior Matt Neeld was defeated in his first match against Rodrigo Almeida from Western New Mexico, 6-1, 7-5.

Three Lobo doubles teams also competed Friday, with all three sweeping their matches to move onto the quarterfinal round of matches on Saturday.

Lobo duo Jadon Phillips and Phil Anderson beat NAU's Brown/Schimmelbauer, 8-2, after receiving a bye in their first round.

Carl Ho and Joe Wood beat Cibrales/Lup from NMMI, 8-1, in their first match. The Lobos had to fight a little harder in their second match against Banuelos/Benoit-Belin from WNMU, where they won 9-7.

Matt Neeld and Mads Hegelund received a bye in their first match, and went on to win their match in the second round against Carlson/Edwards of UNC, 8-2.

Play will pick up again Saturday morning, Oct. 9. Main draw play will begin 9:00 a.m. starting with doubles, singles play will start at 10:30 a.m.
