New Mexico Baseball Splits Games with UTSA, Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico baseball team split games in a doubleheader against UTSA at Isotopes Park on Saturday. The Lobos came from behind, scoring three runs in the ninth inning to beat UTSA, 6-5 in the first day's game. New Mexico fell to UTSA in the second game of the day, 3-1. The Lobos will finish the homestand against UTSA at Noon on Sunday in Isotopes Park.

On the day, junior Ben Woodchick led the Lobos at the plate, hitting 3-for-8 with two RBIs, a run, a walk and a double. Sophomore John Michael Twichell went 3-for-8 with an RBI and a double, while sophomore Mitchell Garver went 2-for-8 with two runs, a walk and an RBI.

The Lobos are now 2-9 on the season after splitting games, while the Roadrunners are now 6-7.

Game 1

UTSA got the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but New Mexico tied in the game in the bottom of the second inning.

Alex Allbritton singled to left field to get on base in the second inning. With Logan Lippert up to bat, Allbritton stole second base. Lippert then doubled down the left field line to score Allbritton and tie the game at 1-1.

The score remained tied until the Roadrunners scored a run in the fifth and sixth inning to get a 3-1 lead.

With one out, Garver singled to the pitcher to get on base. Twichell then grounded out to the first baseman for the Lobos second out, while Garver advanced to second. Quay Grant then reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to score Garver. During the play, Grant was called out at second to end the sixth inning down 3-2.

UTSA and New Mexico exchanged runs in the eighth inning.

The Roadrunners added one more run in the ninth inning. RJ Perucki led off the ninth inning with a single to right center. He then stole second with Riley Good at the plate. Good flied out to center field for the first out of the inning. Daniel Rockett hit a double down the left field line to score Perucki. UTSA ended the ninth inning with a 5-3 lead.

In the last inning at bat for the Lobos, pinch hitter Trey Porras led off with a walk. Jacob Nelson also pinch hit and was walked to put runners on first and second. UTSA then put in Cody Scott for its third pitcher of the day. New Mexico sent in Jordan Vestal to pinch run for Nelson at first.

The Lobos advanced to second and third on a balk by Scott to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Sam Wilson grounded out to third base for the first out of the inning. Woodchick then hit a double down the left field line to score both runners and tie the game 5-5. With a Kyle Stiner strikeout and a DJ Peterson walk, Garver was up to bat. Garver then hit a walk-off single up the middle to score Woodchick and get the 6-5 decision over UTSA.

Richard Olson (1-1) earned the win for New Mexico in relief. Scott (1-2) earned the loss in relief for UTSA.

Game 2

UTSA went up 2-0 in the top of the third inning off of two hits. Matthew James singled to left field and later scored and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Warren. Perucki doubled to right center to score James. Good hit a fly out that advanced Perucki to third base. Perucki went home on a wild pitch by Lobo Jake McCasland to score the second run for the Roadrunners.

New Mexico scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Grant and Cody Doyle led off the inning with a walk each. Allbritton hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to advance runners to second and third. Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Grant for the only run.

UTSA scored one more run in the eighth inning to end the game ahead 3-1.

Jordan Langley (1-1) earned the win for the Roadrunners with four strikeouts. Blake Denman got the save in relief for UTSA. McCasland (0-2) received the loss as the starter for the Lobos.
