ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- BYU scored eight runs in the final two innings Saturday to defeat New Mexico softball, 10-3, at Lobo Field. The Cougars pounded out 14 hits in the game and plated 10 runs on a chilly and cold night in Albuquerque. The Lobos recorded four hits against BYU and scored three runs. New Mexico fell to 10-25 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain West Conference. BYU improved to 26-14 on the year and 3-0 in league play.
BYU scored two runs in the first inning but New Mexico would not go away. The Lobos scored one in the second and tied the game at 2-2 in the third. The game remained knotted at two until the top of the sixth inning.
The Cougars poured on four runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to seal the victory. UNM added one in the home half of the sixth but it wasn't enough.
Freshman Danielle Castro (3-10) took the loss after throwing six innings allowing 13 hits and seven runs. Senior Analise Rubalcava came on in relief to pitch the final inning giving up three runs on one hit.
Christie Zinanti (13-7) got the win after throwing 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs on four hits. Paige Affleck came on in relief of Zinanti and got the save.
UNM will return to action on April 10 at UNLV starting at 7 p.m. MT.
