TUCSON, Ariz. --- The University of New Mexico men's golf team didn't close the Arizona Intercollegiate as it had hoped, shooting a 14-over-par 298 in the final round to finish in ninth place with a 6-over 858 for 54 holes.

Freshman golfer John Catlin topped the Lobos' efforts, finishing in a five-way tie for 11th place after carding a 4-under 66-66-77=209. Catlin had been tied for the lead at 10-under entering Tuesday's final round.

New Mexico entered Tuesday tied with Florida and 10th-ranked Texas A&M for fifth place after carding an 8-under 283-277=560 through the first two rounds, but couldn't make up any ground on the field Tuesday.

The Lobos' James Erkenbeck's quest to card a fourth-straight top-10 finish came up short, as the sophomore's 2-under 72-70-69=211 landed him in a four-way tie for 20th. Erkenbeck, who began the day at even-par and in a six-way tie for 30th, finished three strokes out of the top-ten.

New Mexico's Travis Ross 47th after finishing with a 5-over 74-69-75=218. Teammate Nick Geyer shot a 7-over 71-72-77=220, while Sam Chavez shot a 14-over 76-74-77=227.

Ryan Gay, playing as an individual, carded an 80-70-71=221 to finish at 8-over. Also playing as an individual for the Lobos was Brandon Putnam (83-71-76=230, +17, 65th) and Ryan Smith (75-75-82=232, +19, T68).

California wound up edging out the host Wildcats by a single stroke to take team honors. The Bears shot a 29-under 269-274-280=823, while Arizona posted a 28-under 279-271-274=824.

The Wildcats' Rich Serferian took medalist honors after shooting a 13-under 68-66-66=200.
