ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico men's tennis team started the MWC season off with a victory over Utah 4-3 on Friday. The Lobos improve to 14-6 overall (1-0 MWC) with their seventh consecutive win and their second victory over the Utes this season.
In doubles, Graeme Kassautzki and Joe Wood beat Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin 8-3 at the No. 3 spot to give the Lobos the advantage. Utah tied doubles when Zach Granger and Miron Mann ended Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski's eight-match win streak by handing them only their fifth loss (21-5) of the season, 8-6. The doubles point came down to the No. 2 court where Chris Parkes and Johnny Parkes battled Othman Zerouali-Ouariti and came out victorious 8-5 giving the Lobos a 1-0 advantage.
Chris Parkes had to retire against Taylor to tie the match before Kassautzki finished off Zerouali-Ouariti 6-3, 6-2 on the No. 3 court. Miles Bugby split 6-2 sets against Hancock before winning the match 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. New Mexico and Utah were tied at 3 all with the match between Pajkowski and Allin at No. 6 left to decide the dual. Allin won the first set 6-4 but Pajkowski battled and won back-to-back 6-2 sets for the match.
The Lobos finish up at home against Air Force (10-12, 0-4 MWC) on Saturday and San Diego State on Sunday.
