ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's basketball program announced today that three prospective student-athletes will be enrolling at the University of New Mexico in the fall of 2006. Signed letters of intent were received from Amy Beggin (Roseville Area High School/Maplewood, Minn.), Valerie Kast (Gallup High School/Estonia) and Eileen Weissmann (Loyola Academy/Chicago, Ill.) during the early fall signing period.
Amy Beggin, a 5-7 guard from Maplewood, Minnesota, joins the Lobos from Roseville Area High School. Beggin last season was a class 4A all-state player in Minnesota voted on by the Minnesota Coaches Association. Beggin averaged 14.4 points and 4.4 assist per game last year for head coach Gwen Thielke at Roseville.
Head Coach Don Flanagan on Amy Beggin, "Amy is going to add a lot of quickness and energy to our team. She is a relentless defender and an excellent leader. "
Eileen Weissmann, a 6-0 guard/forward from Chicago, Illinois, joins UNM from Loyola Academy. Weissmann averaged 11.5 points and 8.0 rebounds a game last season for head coach Tanya Johnson at Loyola. Weissmann led her team to a 31-2 record last season, which included the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference Championship and regional championship.
Head Coach Don Flanagan on Eileen Weissmann, "Eileen is a powerful guard who can either pop out or post up. She is a physical player who also shoots the three well."
Valerie Kast, a 6-6 post from Estonia, joins New Mexico from Gallup High School. Kast averaged 13.1 points and 9.1 rebounds a game last season for head coach John Lomasney at Gallup. Kast led her team to the New Mexico class 5A quarterfinals last season.
Head Coach Don Flanagan on Valerie Kast, "Valerie has tremendous upside. She is a left hander who brings a big physical presence to the low post area."
The current Lobos open the 2005-06 season Friday, November 11, against Oral Roberts in the first round of the preseason WNIT at 7:00 p.m. in The Pit.
