COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-- Sophomore Alexis Ball scored in the 70th minute to lead New Mexico over the Air Force Falcons, 1-0 this evening at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Lobos improve to 6-3-4 and 1-1-0 in Mountain West Conference play on the season. The Falcons fall to 3-9-0 overall and 0-2-0 in MWC play.
"It's always good to win and it was a great goal," said head coach Kit Vela. "We had some great opportunities early in the game. I'm real happy with the girls because they never let down and they kept fighting. I'm real proud of their effort."
Ball took a cross from senior Hannah Hand and sent a header past the keeper to the far back post for the goal. The game-winner for Ball was the sixth of her career and moves her into third place all-time at UNM for career game-winners. The assist from Hand was her eight on the season, which is the third most in a single season at New Mexico.
The Lobo offense fired off a barrage of shots and out shot the Falcons by a count of 20-5 with New Mexico taking six shots on goal to Air Force's three.
Senior Shannon Adragna picked up her sixth shutout of the season and her sixth win. The win moves Adragna 19 for her career and moves her into a tie for second place with Melissa Liston all-time at New Mexico.
The Lobo defense held the Falcons to only five shots with three shots on goal. The back line of seniors Samantha Bevis, Krista Peterson, junior Jess Quador and sophomore Megan Bodenheimer held back the Falcon attack the entire match.
New Mexico picked up its fifth consecutive win against Air Force and now has a 4-3 series lead in Colorado Springs.
New Mexico finishes up its seven game road trip when it travels to Laramie, Wyo., on Oct. 12 to take on the Wyoming Cowgirls at 12:00 p.m. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
