FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of New Mexico softball team finished up the Judi Garman Classic with an 8-2 loss to Fresno State at the dual diamond Titan Softball Complex. The Lobos went 1-4 at the Judi Garman Classic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Senior Crisitn Anderson hit .400 over the weekend and hit her third home run of the season against the Bulldogs. New Mexico will be back at home March 26-28 for a three-game homestand against No. 2 Arizona.
New Mexico started the game with a walk by Anderson in the top of the first inning. Jessica Lujan-Dresslar then reached on a fielder's choice and Anderson was out at second. Lujan-Dresslar advanced to second on an illegal pitch; she then stole third and scored with an error by the catcher to put the Lobos up 1-0.
Fresno State came out strong in the bottom of the first inning with a double by Haley Gilleland, who advanced to third when Andrea Ortega reached on an error by the shortstop. Michelle Moses and Courtney Moore both singled to score Gilleland and Ortega. Caitlin Stiglich singled to center field to score Moore. Nicole Angene doubled and Rebecca Walker tripled to score three more runs for the Bulldogs. With two outs, Gilleland was back up to bat and reached on an error by the third baseman to score Walker to end the inning, 7-1.
The Bulldogs scored one more run in the bottom of the second with a home run by Moses, who led Fresno State at the plate. Moses went a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and scored two runs. She (3-0) also earned the win in the circle with 12 strikeouts and only allowed two hits. Walker went 1-for-3 on a triple and had two RBIs and a run scored. With the win Fresno State improved to 19-11 on the season.
The Lobos got their final run in the top of the third inning when Anderson homered to left center to end the game 7-2. Anderson led the team going 1-for-2 on a home run and a walk. Jessica Garcia went 1-for-3 with a double. Lujan-Dresslar scored a run and had a stolen base. Samantha Gatson pitched strong in relief striking out five batters.
Freshman Kari Gutierrez received the loss for the Lobos and is now 2-4 on the season. New Mexico fell to 10-16 and returns home for a three-game homestand against No. 2 Arizona beginning on Mar. 26 at 6:00 p.m. MT. For more information regarding this weekend's games go to www.GoLobos.com.
