ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico volleyball head coach Jeff Nelson announced the 2007 schedule today, which features 11 matches against eight teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year. The Lobos will play 16 matches at Johnson Center, including four against NCAA tournament teams.
The Lobos' final preparation for the season will be Saturday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. with their annual alumni match. The fans will get their first look at the 2007 squad under new leader Jeff Nelson as well as the renovated Johnson Center. The building, celebrating its 50th anniversary, is undergoing some changes this summer, including a new look to the floor, banners and sound system.
UNM's season officially begins Aug. 24-25, hosting its first of two tournaments. Florida Atlantic, Grambling State make their first appearance in Albuquerque as participants while San Jose State, which hasn't been to the Duke City since 1998, rounds out the field.
New Mexico remains at home for a Tuesday contest with Long Island University on Aug. 28. The Blackbirds went 25-11 last year, making the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The competition gets as tough as possible the following weekend as the Lobos travel to a tournament hosted by Arizona State. UNM is slated to take on Iowa State and Arizona State, both NCAA Tournament teams, on Aug. 31. They will conclude the tournament with Northern Arizona on Sept. 1
Tuesday, Sept. 4, New Mexico will play its lone match with in-state rival New Mexico State. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Las Cruces.
The Lobos are back home the weekend of Sept. 7-8, hosting their second tournament and final test before Mountain West Conference action begins. Bowling Green, Gonzaga and Northern Colorado are set to participate.
Conference play begins on the road Sept. 15 at Colorado State. Then the Lobos are back at Johnson Center for matches with Air Force and Wyoming, Sept. 20-21, respectively.
New Mexico takes a quick break from conference action, playing at San Diego. The Toreros posted a 26-6 record last season, making the regionals of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual-champion Nebraska.
The Lobos play five of their next eight conference games on the road. They are back in Albuquerque Nov. 2-3 with back-to-back matches against NCAA participants BYU and Utah, respectively. They conclude the season at home, Nov. 17 with Colorado State.
The Mountain West Conference Championship, back in Las Vegas at the Cox Pavilion for the third straight year, is slated for Nov. 21-24.
"The schedule for the upcoming season is very exciting," Nelson exclaimed! "It affords us the opportunities to test ourselves against some very good teams and also play a significant number of matches at home. I think our fans will like the new look of the team along with the arena. We want to make Johnson the best place to play in the country!"
All 16 of UNM's home games will once again feature live video and CSTV's GameTracker on www.GoLobos.com. Season tickets can be purchased through the UNM Ticket Office at The Pit, or by calling (505) 925-LOBO.
