FINAL - UNM 63 - Texas 60
New Mexico Head Coach Don Flannigan
On the victory over Texas:
If you beat a program like Texas it's going to help you. They are going to win a lot of games this year. I know their personnel and they are very talented. This is one of those wins that gives you some hope to go to the NCAA Tournament. In the short term, it gives our young players a lot of confidence and for our older players confidence to play the way we are capable of playing. I thought we played a great game in the first half. We were able to outrebound them and that was surprising and to limit their break away points.
On the importance of free throws:
It's amazing what free throws can do in the outcome of a game. We shot our free throws and we shot them in clutch situations. Texas shot well from the free throw line and that's one of the reasons they could comeback. They also have some very talented athletes.
On the play of Dionne Marsh:
Dionne plays well against Texas. When we got her the ball we had a much better chance of scoring than if we didn't. I was happy with a 15 point lead because I knew Texas would comeback. I just wish we could have been a little more effective during the second half.
On the Dionne Marsh vs. Tiffany Jackson battle:
It was great to watch Tiffany Jackson and Dionne Marsh go at each other. They are both two great post players. It was very physical inside and very even
Texas Head Coach Jody Conradt
"We missed some many point like shots and weren't very poised. During the first half I thought they took advantage of some lapses we had, they knocked down some big shots. We were almost buried, but I am proud of how our team bounced back in the second half."
"We're really young. I thought we got contributions from a lot of people. I thought our two freshmen grew up this game. Tiffany (Jackson) had a terrific game, she's just that good. To take a team on her back and hold us close like she did in the first half. In the second half I thought our team started to get cohesive, execute."
